Happy National Library Week 2020!
Three years ago, 12 month-old Riley and I were at the beginning of our public library journey through Los Angeles We had been to a handful of LA city branches, and Central Library, and Riley was just starting to attempt walking.
Today, we have visited all 73 LAPL library locations and beyond. . . and are in quarantine during the Corona virus where we cannot physically revisit any of those branches. Four year-old Riley is telling stories about missing preschool, parks, libraries and friends.
We haven’t stopped using our library skills, or laughing. . . we enjoy moments of Riley’s favorite book by Ben Hatke, Little Robot. And until we can frequent our local libraries in person again, we will keep loving the books we are fortunate to have at home more than ever.
When we need more choices other than our books at home, we use the many online e-media resources and digital libraries that LAPL, LA County and Glendale/Pasadena offer. And so can you! Your local public library offers online resources and a digital library as well. I bet they even offer a temporary digital library card if you don’t have a library card yet.
Kanopy, Hoopla, Overdrive, Meet Libby, etc. etc. . . it’s an endless ocean of wonder.
Stay safe, and stay home if you can.
Send a librarian good wishes when you get a minute. Also, look at NASA Hubble pictures, and wish Hubble a happy 30th. Focus on the good things when we can.
Thank you, libraries, librarians, health care workers, grocery store workers, trash collectors — and the endless wonders of books, space, children and the complexities of life on Earth.
